How to tie the “four-in-hand” neck tie

Here’s a clear and simple step-by-step guide to tying a standard necktie using the most common knot, the “Four-in-Hand” knot:

Step 1: Start with the wide end of the tie on your right side and the narrow end on your left side. The tip of the narrow end should sit just above your belt line.

Step 2: Cross the wide end over the narrow end, making an “X” shape.

Step 3: Wrap the wide end behind the narrow end, moving from right to left.

Step 4: Bring the wide end back in front of the narrow end, forming another “X” shape. You should now have a diagonal wrap around the narrow end.

Step 5: Pass the wide end horizontally behind the narrow end from right to left.

Step 6: Bring the wide end up and over the front of the knot, tucking it down and through the loop created around your neck. This loop is between the tie and your shirt collar.

Step 7: Gently pull the wide end downward while holding the knot with your other hand to tighten it.

Step 8: Adjust the knot by sliding it up toward your collar while pulling the narrow end to tighten the tie around your neck. Make sure the knot is centered and the tie is at the desired length.

Step 9: Tuck the narrow end into your shirt, so it’s not visible.

Step 10: Straighten your tie, ensuring it’s neat and wrinkle-free.

And there you have it! You’ve successfully tied a necktie using the Four-in-Hand knot. With practice, you’ll become more comfortable and efficient at tying ties, and you can adjust the length and tightness to your preference.
